When our country won independence in 1947, there were very few girls’ schools in Bajeshibpur area. Girls of the locality had to walk miles to go to Bhabani Balika Vidyalaya. The effort of some people of this area, who were interested in girls’ education and formed a Trust, resulted in the establishment of Sibpur Prasanna Kumari Balika Sikshalaya. Miss Prasanna Kumari Choudhuri, a Christian lady physician practising in Howrah Maidan area, donated an amount of Rs. Fifty thousand (approx.) to the Trust for the purpose of construction of the school building. The money was utilized in purchasing a plot of land at Nil Kamal Kundu Lane, P.O.Shibpur. Members of the Trust as well as the general public donated money for the purpose of construction of the school building.
Meanwhile, the school was established in 1948 and was named after the chief donor, Miss Prasanna Kumari. It enjoyed affiliation of the W.B.Board of Secondary Education up to class X. It started functioning as a private institution in the building of B. K. Pal’s Institution during morning hours. In 1951, the school moved into its own building.
The teachers, office staff and supporting staff were local residents. They were paid paltry salaries by the school from its earnings through fees collected and received Govt. D.A. In 1968, the school came under grant-in-aid and the staff started getting salary according to Govt. scales.
Later, the Trust purchased an adjacent plot of land. A new G+2 building, built in stages with funds from Sarba Siksha Mission, MPLAD fund and donations from sympathisers and guardians stands on this land. It has classrooms, computer room, library and an auditorium.
The W.B. Board of Secondary Education, in recognition of the contribution of Miss P. K. Choudhuri Trust, permitted inclusion of two nominees of the Trust in the Managing Committee of the school. This, however, has been withdrawn with introduction of the present structure of the Committee.
The school was upgraded in the year 2002-03 into a 10+2 institution, with affiliation in arts and science streams at Higher Secondary level. It now offers Bengali, English, History, Geography, Political Science, Education, Philosophy and Environmental Studies.
The school has enthusiastically celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in the year 2007-08. With a dedicated batch of teachers and staff, a supportive Managing Committee and good infrastructure, it looks forward to a brighter future.
