Muralidhar Girls' School (Higher Secondary) - Headmistress' Column
A hundred years back, this school started its journey as a fruit of the efforts of Muralidhar Bandopadhyay, the principal of Sanskrit College, aided by Lady Abala Bose, head of Nari Siksha Samiti. Lady Bose had famously written that women should get a better education because “a woman like a man is first of all a mind, and only in the second place physical and a body.” Today, the school stands tall as an oak, a thriving and flourishing testament to their efforts.
The students who come to this institution today are from different socio economic backgrounds, and different levels of conventionally measurable merit. Regardless of this, the highly dedicated teachers of this institution take it upon themselves to teach these students to dream, and to create their own identities. These identities not only shape and influence their immediate families but also illuminate the society and the nation.
Other than subjects that fall into the syllabus, we emphasise of an education that is wholesome – we prioritize cultural education and constructive, critical engagement with society. Our goal is not to create individuals who are storehouses of conventional merit, but rather, individuals who are elevated thinkers and bring empathy and kindness into the world around them. Both the teachers and the other staff members in the school play a large role in this. The Managing Committee has always aided us in this endeavor to create worthwhile citizens and stayed by our side with all the support we have needed.
To be able to embark on this journey as the Headmistress and allow our students to lead us into the future, and to do this together with such a strong team of people, has always been my greatest joy and pride.
