History of Purbanchal High School
It was in the later part of the 1980s that some of the eminent social philanthropists as well as educationally interested personalities of Jalpaiguri town felt the need of enlightening the children residing at the eastern side of the “Thames” of Jalpaiguri, i.e., Karala river as there was no secondary level school in the area. Moreover, the people of this part of the town known popularly as Bhatakhana, came homeless and penniless from the erst-while East Pakistan, now Bangladesh and they, naturally, belonged to the lowest strata of the society. The plight and misery to maintain their livelihood being their focul point, the residents here could not think of sending their after their primary education to the High Schools located in the main town. Consequently, a large number of students were dropped out and went out of the arena of academic activities. Then those social philanthropists and educationists like Sri Rabindramohon Chakraborty, Kalyan Mukherjee, Md. Ali, Haripada Chakraborty, Kartik Talukdar and many others envisaged to start a basic organizing school starting from Class VI at the local primary school premises in 1987. Then after a long pursuance and effort from the people of the area, the school got affiliation as a Co-educational school from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education to start 2-class, i.e., Class V & Class VI and subsequently, students of the locality got admitted. Later a vacant land near the Teesta embankment was earmarked for erecting building for a full-fledged indigenous school and with the active cooperation and help, both physical and financial, from the local people the school had its own premises and two kuccha rooms as class rooms. Gradually, the school has grown up with up gradation to Secondary and then to Higher Secondary, a three-storeyed building, recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff, its own playground and obviously, a huge influx of the pupils from the locality and the adjacent areas. The students are of not so called bright academically, but they excelled in their high moral, ethical spirit and obedience in nature. The school has produced so many excellent athletes who have achieved acclaims in the District, State and National level. The teachers are striving hard for a better future for their beloved students.
