History

The staff of Kamalakanta High School and the people of the area to which this school belongs, owe their gratitude to the stalwarts who were behind the establishment of this institution.

The thought of establishing an educational institution in the area was first construed by Sri Upendra Mohan Dey, the then Assistant Headmaster of Haldibari High School who was also a renowned education enthusiast of the area. This idea of setting up an educational institution was energetically supported by Sri Harendranath Roy, Sri Upendranath Roy, Sri Mansur Ali and Sri Kshitish Chandra Roy. Their efforts bore fruit when the Bajejama Junior High School started its journey near the Bajejama Primary School in the year 1968 with classes V, VI and VII. The most important job of teaching was voluntarily taken up by Sri Dwijendranath Roy, Sri Mansur Ali and Sri Kshitish Chandra Roy.

Towards the end of 1970 the need for a larger area was felt to accommodate students till class VIII and here too, under the able guidance and foresight of Sri Upendra Mohan Dey, it was decided to set up a new school campus at Anguldakha bazaar. The main hurdle, however, was getting land for the same. After a preliminary meeting for the same, the first person to come forward in this regard was Sri Baruni Mohan Roy, father of Sri Upendranath Roy and Sri Dwijendranath Roy. It was Sri Baruni Mohan Roy’s father Sri Kamalakanta Roy, after whom the school was named Kamalakanta High School. The others to whom we would forever remain grateful for donating land for the institution are Sri Ramani Roy, Sri Pohatu Roy, Md Sahiruddun and Serajuddin Ahamed. The land that presently houses the kitchen shed of the school was a vested land which was used for farming by Sri Manoranjan Debnath. He was provided with land in a different place by Sri Surendranath Roy. This completed the campus of the School. Kamalakanta High School came into existence on 01.01.1971. The founder members were Sri Harendranath Roy, Sri Upendranath Roy, Sri Mansur Ali and Sri Kshitish Chandra Roy.

The staff who first adorned the different posts were Sri Dwijendranath Roy, Headmaster, Sri Kshitish Chandra Roy, Sri Mansur Ali and Sri Arun Kumar Roy, Assistant Teachers and Sri Nabibar Rahaman, Clerk. Sri Nurul Amin Ahamed, Sri Mrinal Gobinda Boishnab and Sri Satyesh Sarkar were later appointed as Assistant Teachers while Smt Minati Roy was appointed as clerk. As the student strength increased, the first official visit for Government approval by officials of the Education Department, Government of West Bengal, took place on August 27, 1978 after which the school was granted the official status of a Junior High School. The school got upgraded to the status of a High School in the year 2000 and to a Higher Secondary Institution in the year 2010.

In its fifty-year long history, the school has been enriched by the contributions of many individuals. However, two individuals without whom this entire journey would have been difficult. We take this opportunity to thank Sri Asimuddin Hoque and Sri Pabiruddin Sarkar who provided continuous help from the outside and made this journey a smoother one.

The institution and its staff express our heartfelt gratitude to all individuals who have been mentioned above and to those numerous individuals who remain unnamed but whose contributions have made this institution, what it is today.
