September , 1980 is an auspicious and memorable day for the people of village Matai. Because, on that very day Matai primary school had started its function following the sanction order from Murshidabad District Primary School Board Sasticharan Bhattacharyal, Basanti Das and Renubala Mondal were appointed as first teachers. The villagers wholeheartedly welcomed them as this was a blessing for the school-less village Matai. At that time, the school going children had to attend Bautipara primary school which is 1.75 KM far from the village. Due to this difficulty only 35-40% of school going aged children were able to attend school. Nevertheless, an ample of difficulties and hurdles were waiting to run a school as there was no school building, no fund, no land.
The villagers of all corners extended their helping hands to the appointed teachers to set up the school and its smooth running. At the beginning school operates in an abandoned house of a villager. Then it had to take shelter under a tree over 12 years. The situation changed in 1992, when due to the noble venture of Bimal Kr. Mondal (the first H.T) and Asoke Kr. Ghosh (A.T.) a piece of land was donated cooperatively by Nabendu bikash Mukherjee, Arun Kr. Mondal, Joydeb Mukherjee, Bimal Kr. Mondal (H.T) and Asoke Kr. Ghosh (A.T.) for the school building. In 1993 getting financial help from Operational Black Board Scheme Murshidabad, Kanailal Ghosh, Prodhan Joypur G.P. and manual help from the villagers’ irrespective of caste and creed the construction of school building started. The wholehearted support and contribution from Bimal Kr. Mondal (H.T), Subhendu Bikash Mukherjee (A.T.), Rathindranath Ghosh (A.T.) for the construction of the school building is specially acknowledged. Two room building of Matai primary school was built. Students and teachers got roof over their head. At the present day, 100% of school going aged children attend school regularly. None is beyond the school arena.
