FOUNDATION

The school GOALJAN REFUGEE HIGH SCHOOL (H.S.), Vill+P.O.-Goaljan, Berhampore, Murshidabad, W.B., Pin-742187 was established in1953, although the initiatives towards setting up a school in the locality started a year ago in 1952.

PREPARATION

When some East Bengal Refugees, people who left the then East Pakistan following the Partion of India, came and settled at Goaljan, a few among them felt the need of education for their children. The idea of setting up a school was first conceived by them. But neither do I know the names of all of them nor can I mention them all here.

LOCATION

Land for the school was specified in the plan for Goaljan Govt. Colony. On that plot of land where, at present, GOALJAN REFUGEE GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL is located, the school began its journey as a co-education school.

STEP-BY-STEP DEVELOPMENT

  • In those days education at public schools was not free. Fees were collected from the students and the money thus accumulated was spent as the salary of the teachers and to meet all the other expenses of running a school. Monetary help from the Govt. was scanty.
  • For the school, the initial years were very trying. It did not get any patronage in the forms of either buildings or large scale financial support from any local zamindars or rich families .The small amount of money collected as subscriptions, the labour offered voluntarily by people and building materials collected free of cost from one or two sources were all used to build up the first school building which consisted of three rooms constructed in a row beside a roofed terrace used as a place of worship of goddess Durga. This original school campus is now a part of Goaljan Refugee Girls' High School.
  •  From 1960 there began to grow a demand for two separate schools for boys and girls. In 1962 when arrangements were made for separate classes for boys and girls in the same building. By 1970 the need for setting up a separate school building began to be felt. However land was allotted to GOALJAN REFUGEE HIGH SCHOOL (H.S.) for the construction of a separate campus. Initially a sum of Rs.19000 was sanctioned for this purpose and with the help of it the first two rooms, were constructed. More rooms were constructed from subsequent grant-in –aid & later by Grants From Sarva Siksha Avijan.Late Madan Mohan Chandra,B.A(H),B.T,was the first person to take the charge of Headmaster of the school.
