
Nabadwip, the birthplace of Sri Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, is a sacred and reputed historical place on the bank of river Ganges. Since middle ages the town has been a reputed centre of Sanskrit learning. So it has been called Oxford of Bengal. Later the town has also been enriched with many reputed schools and colleges – centre of modern education. Nabadwip Balika Vidyalaya which is also named as Ishani Smriti Mandir, is one of the reputed schools – established in 1928 to spread and promote women education in Nabadwip. The school started on 1st January, 1928 with only ten girl students. It was sole initiative of Sri Rohini Kumar Mukhopadhyay and Sri Kalikrishna Bhattacharya and some other persons interested in education. At first school was run in the house of Sri purnendu Narayan Mukhopadhyay and Sri Satish Chandra Chattopadhyay. In 1934 Sri Apurba Kumar Mukhopadhyay donated his own land and built the school building spending ten thousand rupees to commemorate his wife Late Ishani Devi. Sri Apurba Kumar Mukhopadhyay is called the chief doner or ‘PRADHAN DATA’ of the school.
The school was promoted to a Middle English School in 1936. In 1938 four girl students sat for Matriculate Examination. One passed in first division and two in second division.
The school was the first girl school of Nabadwip to be promoted to High English School in 1942 and from 1944 students got permission from Education Department to sit for Matriculation. At that time Primary and Secondary section were conducted by one managing committee. Late the primary and madhyamik section was conducted by two different committee. The school was promoted to a Higher Secondary School in 1960. In 1973, as per new syllabus of 10 + 2 course the school again became a Madhyamik School. In 1997 it was promoted to a Higher Secondary School.
