Development of Barasat as an urban suburban town is integrally entwined with the history of Barasat Govt. School. This school was set up on 1st January in the year 1846 with distinguished academician Peary Charan Sarkar as it’s founder Headmaster. His tenure (1846- 1854) had been a golden period in the annals of the school. Billy Trevor, the then S.D.O, Barasat, also played a significant role during it’s formative period.
First design of the school was conceived by Kshetranath Chatterjee, eminent architect, and main building was constructed in 1851. Comprehensive expansion in infrastructure took place in 1925 with patronage by Fazlul Haque.
Since its inception, many luminaries of Bengal Renaissance were attached with this prestigious institution. Ramtanu Lahiri, Dr. Enamul Haque, Satyananda Pramanik, Narayan Chandra Chanda and many other dedicated educationists had contributed to the development of this school as the worthy legatee of Peary Charan Sarkar during subsequent years. Swami Sibananda ( the 2nd President of Ramkrishna Math ), Dhurjati Prasad Mukhopadhyay (eminent novelist), Manish Ghatak (poet), Sir Rajendranath Mukherjee (distinguished industrialist), Sachindranath or Chabi Biswas, Soumitra Chatterjee (foremost actors) are only some indicative names in the list of illustrious ex-students of this hallowed institution.
The name of the school was changed from “Barasat Govt. High School” to” Barasat P.C.S Govt. High School” by the order of Honourable Governor to immortalize the invaluable contribution of Late Peary Charan Sarkar (vide Notification No.638-SE(Apptt.)/ 10-M – 14/’95 Calcutta, the 11Sept, 1995 during the observance of 150th year of this institution.
This school is gearing up to commemorate it’s 175th anniversary in a befitting way in 2020-21. It has been evolving with time keeping it’s unique tradition intact.
