History

●Immediately after the Independence of India in 1947, then happened to be a mass-exodus from East Bengal,  the millions of the influx into West  Bengal being harboured in the northern fringe of Kolkata, many of whom colonised in and around Subhasnagar to the west of Dum Dum Cantonment Railway station, and were inspired with a noble soul to set up an educational institution with a flare of awakening so as to contribute to the making of a new India. With the earnest desire and whole hearted approach of some pioneering people, DumDum Subhasnagar High School came into existence. 

 

● In the year 1951, this school started in the house of Late Girindra Chandra Bandyopadhyay, the first Headmaster and one of the founders also.

● In those days, there was a graveyard almost in the middle of this locality. This area was donated by the Zamindar of Panihati.

Girindra Chandra Bandyopadhyay along with Sachindranath Ghosh (first secretary), Pareshnath Bhattacharya (first President), Jitendranath Bhattacharya, Saktipada Mukherjee and Jatindra shankar Burman were able to purchase a rectangular plot from the western end of the graveyard. The fund required was raised with the donation from the inhabitants of Subhasnagar.

● In the year 1954 and on 23rd January, the School was shifted to the newly constructed one storied building comprising of some rooms with tin shed.

In the year 1955, the school was upgraded to class VIII standard by the WBBSE.

● In 1961, a lump sum amount was sanctioned by the Government of West Bengal for the development of School, which was pursued by the then Minister and the Chairperson of Bidhan Parisad, Srijukto Pratap Chandra Guha, a resident of Dum Dum Cantonment. By utilizing the amount granted, it was possible to convert the school in a three storied building.

● The school was upgraded to XI class standard in 1963 and again became Madhyamik in 1976. In 1996, it was upgraded to 10 + 2 standard with co -education in the HS level.

● Dum Dum Subhasnagar High School has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2003 and till date it has been serving and trying its level best to spread education among the society.
