Ramnagar Atul Vidayalaya, a centenary year old school, is one of the best and oldest schools in the sub-division of Arambagh under Khanakul Police Station of Hooghly district. It was established in the year 1917 by Honourable Shri Atul Chandra Batabyal. Mr. Batabyal who was educated, cultured and benevolent, was born in an aristocratic Batabyal family of Ramnagar village. He was a man of exceptional personality. We do not know much about the life of Shri Batabyal but his only identity is his immortal and noble creation.
Mr. Batabyal retired from his service as a Judge from the Court of Bishnupur. After retirement from his service he was guided and influenced by the doctrines of Raja Rammohan Roy and Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. He totally devoted himself for spreading of mass education. He set up a Pathshala in his birthplace and he himself taught both boys and girls without taking any remuneration from them. In the year 1917, Mr. Batabyal sold all his properties and established ‘Middle English School’ in the name of Ramnagar Atul Vidyalaya. He deposited a sum of Rs. 50000 only as a security deposit to a bank in order to get a permanent source of income. From that interest he paid the daily expenditure of the school including the salary of the teaching staff and others. He made a Deed and placed before the Honourable Governor General of West Bengal with a view to get approval of Ramanagar Atul Vidayalaya and the security deposit amounting Rs. 50000. But unfortunately before getting approval of the deed Mr. Batabyal breathed his last. Later his wife also expired. Finding no other alternative, Honourable Governor General wrote a letter to the family members of Atul Chandra Batabyal and wanted to know about the deed. His other brothers informed the Governor General in black and white their consents about the deed. In the mean time security deposit amounting Rs. 50000 became Rs 54000 with interest. The authority of Ramnagar Atul Vidyalaya received the interest of the security deposit upto the year 1954-55. The school was up to the class VI in the name of Middle English School up to the year 1954-55. Later the school got approval of starting class VIII and got promotion as Junior High School only for boys. From the month of January, 1957 the school was upgraded to class X. In the year 2010 the school was also upgraded to Higher Secondary section both for boys and girls. According the Deed, the school was under special constitution up to the year 1995-96. Afterwards the institution was under the rules and regulations of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and formed a Managing Committee according to the rules of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education. Then Government acquired the security deposited amount of Rs. 54000.
The first Managing Committee of Ramnagar Atul Vidyalaya as special constitution was as follows:
