History

Khatra High School has evolved into one of the premier centre of learning in Bankura district. Its students have regularly stood out in the state level examinations, and left their mark in every sphere of life. It has the humblest of origin, and it took a hundred year’s time with much toil and sacrifice, to arrive at this stage.
Encouraged by popular demand, a civil servant Mr. Vas, while serving as the District Magistrate of Bankura, set up a school at Khatra in 1920. It was named after its benefactor, as “Vas Santi School”. The lawyers of nearby Khatra Munsif Court took active interest in the activities of the school. A prominent lawyer Mr. Nibaran Mitra was appointed the first headmaster of the school on an ad hoc basis. Mr Surya Narayan Chaudhary another lawyer became the secretary of the first managing committee.
Mr Ashwini Kumar Das took over the reins from Mr Nibaran Mitra in 1922. He continued for the next 18 years and succeeded in giving the newly formed school a solid foundation. In 1924 the school was renamed as Chandrasekhar H E School and became affiliated to the University of Calcutta. That year the school crossed another milestone. First batch of students appeared at the final Matriculation examination.
Khatra High School got its present name in the 1930’s. With the passage of time it acquired recognition for class x and then class xii in 1952 and 1994 respectively. Along the way, it went through some rough patches but never failed to adapt to new conditions or overcome adversity, and stay relevant. It still possesses the same fervour of spreading the light of education, as the founding fathers intended.
