History

In the last half of the 19th century, some local persons, interested in eductaion, inspired by the Renaissance Movement, set up a mud built cottage to facilitate study of science and Western Philosophy in English Language, which was named Jhikra Middle English School, financed by Howrah District Board wih Govt. Grant of Rs. 30/- per month. From 1873 to 1889 for 16 years at a stretch total 39 students out of 54, appeared in the Final Exam, were successful. Jhikra Middle English School assumed the name Jhikra High School in 1889. This as the official year of foundation of Jhikra High School. In this work process contribution of Sri Baradacharan Bhattacharyya, local patron of education, is very significant.

In 1938 Golden Jubilee of the school was celebrated. Humanities stream in 10th level was introduced in 1957. Gradually new pucca building were set up one after another, that marked the consistent growth of the institution. The permission to open Science and Commerce streams was received in 1962 and 1966 respectively. The School was formally upgraded to Higher Secondary Level in 1977, X+2 as a co-ed section.

In course of timethe school crossed 100 years of its foundation in 1989 and the centenary was observed with much fanfare. The completion of 125 years was celebrated in 2014 in a befitting manner.

Today the institution has developed in all respect. Thousands of passed-out students are placed at dignified positions in diverse fields of the society. So many teaching and Non-teaching staff have given their best in the interest of the students. Now it's time to recall the tireless effort of uncountable patrons of education in the development of the school over the years.
