History

Salkia NCOS Girls’  began its journey as Salkia Baikunthanath Mahamanab Vidyamandir Jr. High School to facilitate the education of lower-middle class Bengali girls of the locality. The school had only upper primary classes ( V to VIII ) at first, but with the relentless effort of the Headmistress, Late Aparna Banerjee and other founder teachers and non-teaching staff, it was upgraded as a High School in 1884. Although the students were mostly first generation learners, they performed well in the Board Examinations. Late Alokdoot Das, former Mayor of Howrah Municipal Corporation, was the President of School Managing Committee for a long period. Gradually in the late nineties, the socio-economic conditions of the locality started changing and Bengali population began decreasing. Bengali medium Primary schools  also had to be closed due to lack of students. This school also started suffering as number of Bengali speaking students decreased. This problem still persists as the school has no primary section of its own.
