Ushangini Balika Vidyalaya is a prominent school of North Howrah, located besides the serene Sadhu Ghat of Hooghly River near Bandhghat, Salkia. “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Probably, paying homage to this timeless adage, the school embarked on her first journey with 127 students on 10th February, 1941. Soon, the school was forced to close due to the calamitous events of the Second World War. However, the spark of education had lit a fire, the fire of learning. Noble souls interested in education toiled relentlessly and the school started anew on 2nd January, 1946 with 143 students. Eminent social worker late Saila Kumar Mukherjee named the school in memory of his beloved mother. During its inception, the school was the girls’ counterpart of Salkia A. S High school. Calcutta University approved Ushangini Balika Vidyalaya as a high school in the year 1947-48. In the same year, two students had taken the Matriculation Exam. Though we have crossed a long path, overcoming many obstacles on the way, we must strive to improve and in doing so spread the fire of knowledge to our vicinity and beyond.
