History

Howrah Jogesh Chandra Girls’ School is a very well known school of West Bengal. Incepted in 1930 with the demand of guardians for schooling of their girl children. Originally, the school started her journey with only two rooms in Lakshman Das Lane of Panchanantala with the enormous effort of Sri Jogesh Chandra Dasgupta, her founder member. The school has rapidly overcome her childhood and expanded the petals with great hope and aspirations. The former name of the school was Howrah Girls’ High School. The address changed to 20, G.T. Road (S) Howrah in 1934 and from the next year i.e. from 1935 her 1st batch was sent for Matriculation. It was a very well known school with English medium in the pre independence era. But after introduction of Grant in aid in 1949, Bengali medium started. It was upgraded to a multipurpose school in 1957 with Science, Arts, Home Science and Fine Arts as her four pillar of education.

The name of the school changes to Howrah Jogesh Chandra Girls’ School in 1960 after the demise of Sri Jogesh Chandra Dasgupta on 6th May, 1958.
