Howrah Vivekananda Institution, formerly known as Saraswati Institution was set up in 1922 by a band of enthusiastic young men who dedicated their lives to follow and practise in life the teachings and ideals of the legendary Hindu Monk Swami Vivekananda. It is an integral part of The Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashrama established in 1916 earlier by the same band of youths with a view to rendering help to the distressed and the downtrodden people of the locality and to spread the ideals of Swami Vivekananda among the locals. Swami Shivanandaji, a disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the 2nd President of Ramakrsina Math & Ramakrishna Mission, said to the group of enthusiastic  young “Service or business is not your cup of tea. Rather set up a School.” In 1926 Swami Shivanandaji when visited the school commented - “Onward, Forward Don’t Look back”. The Institution has been functioning since 1922 is now striding to complete its long journey of 100 years with a glorious contribution in the arena of education of the Country as well as turning out and ‘Man Making Education’ in the true sense of the tern to brighter up the ever glowing face of the Mother India. With the blessings of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, the Institution which claims to be the first Higher Secondary School in West Bengal,India as well as   in the World named after Swami Vivekananda aspires to contribute to the cause of education in the years yet to come, offering to the Country a fresh band of enthusiastic well-disciplined young men every year to become the fate-makers of Mother India under the able guidance of the Head Master Sri Sobhan Kumar Bera who steers the school to get at the right goal. The Howrah Vivekananda Institution situated in the central part of Howrah City, West Bengal, has in its possession above 8 Bighas of  land with three specious green play grounds where students numbering to more than 3 thousand (Class I to XII) on its roll practise various games. The institution has a band of 65 dedicated and highly qualified teachers to render the best of education to its students. From the very beginning, the eminent monks of the Ramakrishna Mission like Swami Nirvenanda, Gambhirananda, Bhuteshananda, Vishashashrayananda, Hiranmayananda, Smaranananda, Goutamananda, have been shouldering the responsibility of the President of the Managing Committee of the School. Among them Swami Gambhirananda and Bhuteshananda later became the President of the Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Smaranananda is now the secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Shivamoyananda, the President of the Managing Committee, is also the Assistant Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, an Institution which boasts of international acclaim. At present, the president of the managing committee is Swami Shastragnandaji, Principal of the Belur Vidyamandir. Other presidents are Swami Tyagarupanandaji (Ex Principal of the Belur R. K. Vidyamandir), Swami Nirantaranandaji.
