Pioneer educationist Sri Kaliprasanna Chakraborty is the founder of Town School Calcutta. The mission for an elite educational institution started from a small shade at SahityaParishad Street . Then it was a 'toll' named National Seminary. Overcoming several limitations of accommodation and funds, an aspiring journey finally culminated in the formation of a Middle English School. The Town School was established on 21st November, 1894. Being inspired by her mentor Sri BalanandaBramhachariMaharaj at Deoghar, MrsCharushilaMajumder offered her land at Shyampukur area and built a three storied school building, which is now a heritage.Thanks to her generosity,Town School Calcutta is being run at this rented premises at 33, Shyampukur Street since 1915. In 1914, students of this school,appeared in the Matriculation Exam for the first time. The galaxy of students has left their mark in the field of education.The school gradually became a name in the map of education in Bengal. It was affiliated under the Calcutta University. Numerous luminaries in different areas of knowledge have begun their lives from this elite institution under the guidance of great teachers.
Town School Calcutta has contributed to freedom movement, politics and changes in society of Calcutta and Bengal and thus was affected in different times. In 1970 it became a government aided school and in 2015 the school got recognition as government sponsored institution. Since 1993 it is a Higher Secondary school with science, arts and commerce streams.Now this school is a Bengali medium co education school.
