
Metropolitan Institution (Main) was founded in 1864 by Pandit Iswarchandra Vidyasagar to whom the education for boys and girls was top priority.
The Girls’ section [Metropolitan Institution (Main) For Girls] was later established by Vidyasagar Institute – a Trust Body. It is a heritage property with a crying need to be upgraded. The school is held in the morning, in the same building where the Boys’ school is held at day time.
Metropolitan Institution (Main) For Girls has been carrying a rich tradition in imparting value oriented education to the students coming from poor families mostly in central Kolkata. The Institution having completed 71 years of its journey, boast of its association with Iswarchandra Vidyasagar, the great doyen of Bengal Renaissance.
This Institution also boasts of its golden list of alumni’s which includes Swami Vivekananda himself, Brajanath Dey (Home tutor of Rabindranath Tagore) and later Dharani Mohan Mukherjee (National Teacher – Prize winner) and Smt. Sukla Biswas Rudra (Ex lecturer of Vidyasagar College for Women).
