History

Ours is an H.S institution founded by Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar at ‘Pantir Math’ near Thanthanea locality in the year 1864. The name of the school was Hindu Metropolitan Institution. In 1872, a college wing was started with F.A (First Arts) classes in the same building, where Surendranath Bandopadhyay served as a professor for a while. This name was changed to Metropolitan Institution at the time of seeking recognition from the University of Calcutta. In 1917, the college wing named as Vidyasagar College as per suggestion of Sir Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay.

Our institution is associated with so many luminaries like Late Brajonath De, private tutor of the world-poet Rabindranath Tagore and he was the Superintendent of this institution, Poet Hemchandra Bandyopadhyay was the first headmaster, Mohitlal mazumdar was teacher and so on.
