When Taltala High School was born, Kolkata was the capital of British-ruled India. Long before its official establishment the school had started taking shape. The then establisher and Headmaster Mr.Jaykrishna Mukhopadhyay fist initiated the school at his own house on the Taltala Bazaar Street. But like a candle emitting light the school soon gained prominence and influx of students began. With it began the shifting of the school building to accommodate the eager students. In 1910 when the school owned the address of No 1 Doctor’s Lane, it for the first time gained formal establishment as Taltala High School. Year after year, sitting in the heart of Kolkata this institution has harboured great minds both teachers and students. Currently it stands on S.N Banerjee Rd, still popular, still unique.
A school where poet Mohitlal Majumder had taught literature as a Bengali teacher, indeed has a heritage unparallel. With the motto – ‘Vidya Dadati Vinayam’ – Taltala High School (HS) aims to impart wisdom through lessons of modesty. It believes – it is not enough to infuse education. The aim is to build worthy citizens for tomorrow.
Due to change of time and shifting taste of society, inflow of Bengali-medium students in even such a heritage school is decreasing. People are more into sending their children to English-medium schools. But to combat that situation, the school has come up with a bouquet of teachers efficient in all three languages required for medium of instruction in such a cultural milieu – Bengali, Hindi and English.
Our students often say ‘ Once a student of Taltala, always a student of Taltala’. That’s what the school has been able to do through years of quality care – transform from a school to a feeling – it has become an inevitable root in its students’ life. What more can we want?
