
SRMGS, one of the most well known H.S schools in Bhowanipore area was first started as Hindu Balika Vidyalaya in 1897 near paddapukur but later the school building was shifted to 15, Jogesh Mitter Road with the help of the donations received from the local educated well-wishers.
In 1940 after the death of Sir Romesh Mitter,the first Bengali judge of Calcutta High Court,the school was renamed as SRMGS by the then great educated personalities like Subodh Mitra,Charuchandra Biswas,DhirenBose etc. This was the only girls school in this area and well known dignitaries like Gurusaday Dutta, Mahhatma Gandhi and Sarojoni Naidu paid occasional visit to the school and appreciated the students' performance.
The new building of the school came up with the initiative of Durga Majumder,former Headmistress of the school. With the construction of the new building of the school, the H.S section (up to class XI) got Govt recognition.
Since then the school has been running successfully with the help of a number of efficient student friendly teachers.At present the school has all three streams Humanities,Science and Commerce and the teachers dedicatedly impart education to the students. In the midst of sprawling English Medium schools this 123 years old school is serving the little children of the area and away with much reputation.
The children of the school participate successfully in different aspects starting from quiz debate to elocution and even different eco-club related projects.
This is the only school in Bhowanipore area that has well equipped laboratories not only for science subjects but also for Geography,Computer and Nutrition.
Besides academics the students have added a number of caps in the field of sports...students regularly participate not only in district and state level but also in National level.
The Headmistress and Teachers of the school have taken the pledge to take the school far ahead in all remarkable fields. Even to give stress on spoken English or communicative English an American scholar is invited every year as guest teacher with Indo -American collaboration under full bright scholarship.
