History

'The Kidderpore Academy', is a Higher Secondary School. The journey began with only 118 students on 30th June 1906 in a house situated at 51 Nazir Md. Ghat Majhi Lane. By the end of the year the student strength rose to 230. To accommodate the lower classes a house was rented at Rs. 30/- at 11 Garbari Road (presently Miachel Dutta Street).

The school received the recognition of Calcutta University in 1907. Avinash Chandra Das Ghosh, a businessman donated his residential house at 35 Ramkamal Street in the year 1919. The school shifted to this building in 1923 after the puja vacation. After the demise of Avinash Chandra, the school building was named 'Avinash Hall'.

Jitendranath Bandyopadhyay joined the institution as Headmaster in 1945 (1945- 1966). The institution reached its highest fame during this period.  The Scout Group was established in 1934 under the guidance of Jagat Prasanna Gangopadhyay.

In 1948 the student strength rose such that the 'Nawab Bari' at 11 Rangalal Street was rented at Rs. 70/- to accommodate Class V & Class VI. The morning Primary Section also commenced in the school building from that year.

The Golden Jubilee of the school was celebrated in 1956. The school was upgraded to Class XI in 1958. During 1960- 63 three galleries and three laboratories (Physics, Chemistry & Biology) were constructed in the three floors of the main building. In 1965 the ground floor of the Annex Building at 2 Pitambar Sirkar Lane was constructed. The first floor of the building was completed in 1970- 71.

The Platinum Jubilee was celebrated in 1981, 80th foundation day was observed on 30/06/1986, 85th year of the school was celebrated in 1991. The centenary of the institution was celebrated in December 2005.

Apart of from Scout Group, National Cadet Corp, the School Band added feathers to the crown of the school.

Some eminent students of the school: Achyut Mitra, Dr. Tarak Mohan Das, Padmabhusan Kedarnath Mukhopadhyay, Milan Mukhopadhyay, Purnendu Ghosh, Dr. Gora Chand Nandi, Jayanta Kumar Pal, Sufal Chandra Kanral, Ajoy Kumar Bhattacharya, Sushil Chattopadhyay, Rajsekhar Sarkar, Ratneswar Mukherjee, Dilip Ghosh, Surya Bandyopadhyay, Dr. Barun Chakraborty, Justice Asok Kumar Gangopadhyay, Dr. Madan Gopal Mukhopadhyay, Dr. Anil Bhowmick, Samir Gayen, Nilangshu Das, Gour Prasad Das etc.

Among the teachers who received National honour were Amalendu Chakraborty (literature), Binode Das (painting) & Utpalendu Chakraborty (film making).

Presently both the student strength as well as the staff strength has dropped much. The school buildings has lost its old glory. 

The Century- old institution draws the attention of ex- students and well wishers.
