
In the era of pre-independence, Kolkata was the second home of Odias. Lakhs and Lakhs of Odia’s were working in Kolkata port, Dock, and Jute mills. It was urged to have an institution to impart education to their children through their mother tongue. It took shape in the year 1946. The school was housed in a spare godown, donated by Kolkata Port Authority. It started on the 21st day of November of the same year, i.e. 1946.
Under the leadership of Paramannada Samal, a strong labor union leader, Mr. Satya Sekhar Patnaik, dry Dock Superintendent of Kolkata Port and Mr. Dwijabara Dash a foreman of Kolkata Dock Labor Board the school flourished. Odias living in and around Kolkata rendered their help and co-operation spontaneously.
In Year 1962, it drew the attention of the West Bengal Education Department. It got the recognition of class IV, a primary school. Subsequently, it became a recognized junior high school in 1968. In the year 1975, the dream came true. It attained the status of a full-fledged Govt. recognized co-education school.
In the Yeat1981 it came under the Salary deficit scheme of the West Bengal Education Department. It cheers the Odias as they got an opportunity to educate their children in their mother tongue. The result of the school in Madhyamik Pariksha since it’s inception is always satisfactory. The passed-out students of the school, got their Higher educations are now Engineers, Doctors, and administrators and placed in various responsible and high positions in different parts of India.
With expansion though slow the school at present is housed in a four-storied building with an enriched library, computer, and science laboratory. The classrooms are well-furnished, the required teaching aids are also available. Significantly, the Govt. of West Bengal, the education department, the SSM and the local authorities has provided all the most needed help to this linguistic minority institution for its all round development. The school is not merely an educational institution. It is a symbol of pride and glory for the Odia community living in Kolkata.
