History

A School Profile of Bhagwanpur High School It all happened about way back 95 years ago. Three large Parganas were wallowing in the mud puddle of intellectual backwater and steeped in darkness in terms of education. Prasanna Kumar Chakraborty laid the foundation stone of the school in 1923 A.D. The-then Chandra Kumar Ghosh And Kiran Chandra Raha a patron of Local Police Station felt that the need of the hour was to establish and educational Institution to remove the slough of illiteracy and dissemination of knowledge among the surrounding villages. The-then Mr. Chandra Kumar Ghosh , the sub-manager of local Tahasil office, was a lover of education and a man of the people. Apart from a competent Govt. employee he was at the forefront of propagating education, distributing medicines free among the poor and the downtrodden. These welfare activities were done by him with meticulornes attention and religious exactitude avid Buoyed up by his unstinted love and inspiration his followers and the big guns of the locality adopted a resolution o establish a secondary English School. The village people of Bhagwanpur visible spurred by the generous donation of parcel of land meant for the site of the school Chandra Kumar Ghosh ‘Maddha Secondary School’ came into being in 1919 A.D. Capitalizing on the concerted effort and unremitting help and unalloyed love of the common people the said Institution was elevated to High English School in 1922 A.D. In lieu of a nominal remuneration Basanta Kumar Bera, a resident of village Nunbarh, Sri Haripada Kabyatirtha, a resident of Buraburi village were engaged in imparting education in 1923 A.D. Sri SurendraNath Manna B.A. was engaged as the Head Master on a temporary basis in 1924 A.D. Next year Nilmoni Bera B.A. was appointed as the permanent Head Master and very year the school was affiliated to Calcutta University and recognized as the ‘Second English High School’ in the surrounding area. A ravaging storm in 1925 A.D coupled with the swelling in the river Kaleghai brought the inexorable march of the school to an apparent grinding halt. But the pro-active intervention of the-then Sub-inspector of police station Mr. Kiran Chandra Raha ‘co-president of the Managing Committese’ brought a whiff of fresh life into the school in 1934 A.D. He took the helm of the affair at the sharp end of it and made it a success story ably assisted by generous soules like- Basanta Kumar Dev, Krishnalal Das, Upendralal Patra, Dharanidhar Patra and to name but a few. Under his inspiring stewardship the teachers of the school mad an expedition trying to collect money and land infavour of the hallowed Institution. Under the aegis of some well-to-do men and the ones who had genuine penchant for education a considerable amount of money and land was collected and with that the school was renovated and rejuvenated and some more rooms were added. In 1942 A.D an unprecedented whirlwind brought about a sea change in the life of the school in terms of the destruction. The body of the school was virtually razed to the ground and everywhere there was agonized cry for bare necessities of life. Everyone suffered from the privations of life. The school was sans students . A huge chunk of teachers left their job in search of bread elsewhere. The Managing Committee was also left to a cleft stick. At that critical juncture the-then Head Master Surendra Nath Manna with the active assistance of the followers of his footprints made a last ditch attempt to keep the flame burning which was on the verge of being extinguished alive . Though through their unswerving effort and self- sacrifice the school was put on the path of progress to some extent, it could not fully survive the irreparable damage and ravages of the strong gale. So extensive was the damage that it was almost impaired beyond repair so to say. In 1945 A.D. the-then D.I of Schools Sri Satyendra Nath Majumdar gratuitously lent his helping hand and advised the school authority to submit an application for capital grant and subsequently on his recommendation four rooms were constructed providing the school authority bore half the money of the estimated cost in 1954. The said rooms were all brick-build. To fructify this plan into a reality the names which came atop the list were Upendra Nath Patra and a devoted teachers. Imparting education on Arts, Science and Commerce got the necessary of the Govt. approval within 1962,1963 and 1969 respectively. In 2006 A.D another stream viz Vocational Stream was introduced by the West Bengal Council of Vocational Education. At present, apart 45 class rooms and laboratories on 6 subjects the well-equipped library taxes the pride of place in our school, besides a spacious staff room, a common room meant for the girls, one office room, one Head Master’s room and one E.C.C.S. room redound to the glory of the body of the building. To crown it all in 2017 A.D. on the 2nd floor above the administrative building a stunning Auditorium room measuring about 3200 square feet and the largesse was magnanimously donated by none othan than the generous soul Mr. Safiulla Mallick the reign Secretary and his worthy better- half and alter ego Minara Bibi of village Benudia, P.O. – Bhagwanpur. This Auditorium has been consecrated in the name of his departed parents names’. The name of the Bhaban is- Jasiman Mohini Bhaban. Above this grand hall the 3rd floor one room was donated by Sri Ashoke Kumar Dasmahapatran Ex. Assistant Teacher of this school.
