LOOKING BACK FOR HISTORY It is always difficult to write something about the history of any institution which is more than seventy years old .Still ,as a headmaster of this institution ,I am trying to peep into the past history of this institution. Punam Chand Mittal Memorial High School (HS) , formerly known as Satali Model English School and thereby Satali High School , was established on 2nd January , in 1948, since the day is observed as the Foundation Day of the school every year .Our country has got freedom in 1947 from the bondage of the British rule .But the people of our country were still in the darkness of ignorance ,illiteracy and superstition. And the people of this locality are among them. But there were some people who came forward to remove the darkness of ignorance, illiteracy and superstition .They felt that only education can remove this darkness and came forward to set up a school in the locality. As a result, they set up this school, named as Satali Model English School. Land was donated by Mr. Mahendra Nath Roy,Jnanendra Nath Roy , and Upendra Nath Roy . ,Binod Bihari Mandal and some other respected people of the locality.The school is located at Purba Satali,near Satali GP,in Kalchini block of Alipurduar district.Almost all the people living here belong to ST category.Mech, Rava, Oraon , Santal, Munda, Kharia, Asur and Toto ----all are living here peacefully. They are mostly Hindu, Christian and Buddhist by religion.And most of them are living below poverty level. They worked in closed tea gardens,now collect wooden fuels from forest and sand and stone chips from river bed.Basiclly, they are deprived education. In 1951, it was decided that Satali Middle English school would be upgraded to High English School in a meeting , presided by Jnanendra Nath Roy.Previously, there was no B.A. pass Headmaster in the school.Mr. Lalit Mohan Biswas ,I.A. was the first headmaster of this school.Later , he he resigned from his post and Mr.Haran Chandra Rakshit,B.A. pass took the charge of Headmaster of the school.Other teachers were Lalit Mohan Biswas,Harendra Nath Brahma,Monindra Mohan Saha,Keshab Lal Chanda, Gopinath Murmu, Sachindra Kumar Bardhan,Sailesh Chandra Roy,and Gouranga Narayan Das.Non-teaching staff were Dwijendra Mohan Nath(clerk) and Murlidhar Michhir(Gr.D). In 1954,the provisional recognition of the Satali Junior High middle English School was extended for two years(from 1st January,1954).In the mean time the headmaster of the school,Mr. Haran Chandra Rakshit resigned from his post and Mr. Kumud Bihari Nandi,B.A. pass was appointed to the post of headmaster.But in 1956, the provisional recognition of the Satali 2 classes Junior High School was extended for 2 years (from 1st January,1956).This time , the term “Middle English” was omitted for from school name.In 1958, The school obtained further extension order of 3 class Junior High School for 2 years and 3 months(from 1st January,1958).And the recognition of 4 class High School was obtained in 1959(from 1st April,1959). In 1957,the headmaster of the school.Mr. Kumud Bihari Nandi had retired from his post and Mr. Bibhuti Bhusan Singha was appointed to the post of headmaster.He continued to his post till 1960. After that, Mr. Samirendra Prasad Chakraborty,B.A.pass, was appointed. But Mr. Chakraborty probably did not take the charge and Mr. Singha resumed his duty till his death(26/02/1964).Later Mr. Nirmal Kumar Biswas(short time) and Jiban Chandra Dey served as headmaster respectively till 07/01/1971.Thereby Mr. Dhirendra Narjinary,M.A. was appointed to the post of headmaster and secretary jointly.
