In 1968 some enlightened souls at Lalgarh in the then undivided Midnapur district felt the need for establishing a girls’ school in the village principally with a view to spreading the light of education among the underprivileged tribal girls in the remote forest bound area. The task was daunting. Civic amenities in the area was scarce, transport was rare, good teachers were hard to come by and above all, convincing parents of the utility of sending their girl child to school was a challenging proposition. To this end, a meeting was held on 12 April 1968 and laying the foundation of a girls’ school, even in the face of all odds, was unanimously decided upon. The school was accommodated in the out-house of the residence of Smt. Sushama Sundari Debi, a great enthusiast of the movement for women’s education and empowerment in the area. Smt. Pushpa Maity became the first Headmistress of the school , the Late Purnachandra Roy the first Secretary and the Late Abani Bhusan Roy its first President. The school got its name –Lalgarh Saradamoni Balika Vidyalaya – at the next meeting of its founder members which took place on 22 November 1969. It was affiliated as a junior high school in January 1969 and was upgraded to a Madhyamik school in 2000 and again to a Higher secondary school in 2011. The school celebrated its Golden Jubilee year in 2018. The year-long celebrations, attended by many dignitaries and some noted academics, was flagged off by the then teacher-in-charge Smt. Paromita Roy and later concluded under the able stewardship of Smt. Swarnalata Bera , who took over as Headmistress in July 2019. At present the school boasts a three storey quadrangular building spread over a capacious campus beside the main road at Lalgarh. The roll strength has swelled to more than a thousand and the staff strength is twenty. The school has a hostel for tribal girls , a well-stocked library, a well-equipped multi-gym and an ICT laboratory. Over the years the girls have left their mark in the Board and Council examinations as also in various cultural and sports activities.The school is all set to emerge as one of the most noteworthy educational institutions of the state before long.
