History

DAKSHINKHANDA HIGH SCHOOL is located in the coalfield area in the District of Paschim Bardhaman. The school is situated on the Andal Ukhra Road at the northern end of the village Dakshinkhanda. Just beside the school is Moira Colliery. The school was established in the year 1960 as per the recognition though the school was functioning from 1958. At that time the literacy rate of the local people was very low and education was out of the ambit of most of them. Guided by dream and youthful zeal, some people of the locality ventured the idea of establishing a high school in the village. The school was started in small room inside the village and gathered momentum. Some eminent people of the village came forward to donate land with a noble mission of spreading education. Almost 3 acres of land was donated by them and the school was shifted to its present position. A few rooms were constructed with the help of the villagers. E.C.L also helped for this. Students from neighboring villages of far and near, started to take admission. At first it was a 2-class Junior High School, then upgraded to 4-class Junior High School. Number of students increased with the passage of time. For quite a long time it remained a Junior High School and took more than 3 decades to be upgraded to Secondary school. In the year 1994 the school became a secondary school with co-education. At present the school is set to be upgraded to a Higher Secondary School.

Though the school had almost 3 acres of land in the initial stage a large portion of land has been encroached by unauthorized occupant as there was no boundary covering the entire land. Only a few years back the size of the school was also small. But at present the school has a decent building with reckonable size with a boundary wall all around along with a nice adjacent playground.

The present Head of the Institution is Somnath Gangopadhyay (Headmaster). He is a Post Graduate in English with a degree in teaching (B.Ed.). He joined this school as the Headmaster on 14.05.2010 and since then holds the post till date. Previously he was as Assistant Teacher of English in Ichhapur N.C. High School and also in Life Insurance Corporation of India for almost three years.
