History

The Durgapur Chemicals Secondary School was established in the year 1980, keeping with the aspirations of the people living in and around the Durgapur Chemicals Ltd. plant and its housing. Prior to its establishment the children of the workers of the plant and the residents of Raturia, Angadpur, Housing Colony, Ashisnagar etc., localities around the plant had to face great hardships to pursue their studies, as they had to travel several kilometers to reach schools like DPL Boys' and Girls'. However, with the active financial and logistic help and initiative from the management of DCL a new building was erected to teach classes VI to X , and the school started its journey on 6th February, 1980.A few more classrooms were constructed gradually. The DCL at that time provided the School with the infrastructural requirements like electricity, water ,benches, chairs, tables and also paid the salary of the teaching and non-teaching staff. Class V from the pre-existing primary school was incorporated into the newly founded school thereafter. In the year 1984 the school obtained its recognition from the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, and the first batch of Madhyamik Pariksha candidates appeared from the school the following year, i.e.1985. Late Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay, who left for his heavenly abode inthe year 2020, was appointed as the first Headmaster of the school. The school came under the Grant-in-Aid scheme in the year 1990.

Since its inception the school has been treading on a path of innumerable highs and lows, fighting all obstacles with grit and quiet resolve, dedicated to keep the lamp of education burning forever. A great number of alumni of this institution have established themselves in different fields of the society through the years that have passed, and their universal attitude of gratitude and respect to their alma mater is treasured as inspiration for the posterity.
