The Government Woodburn M.E School was originally started as a Branch of the Calcutta Madrasha in 1856 with eleven teachers on the staff. Messers W. Scott, M. Gregory, Kali Prassana Chatterjee C.I.E and Edward Clegharn were respectively the Headmasters of the Institution. In course of time this high school was reduced to the status of a Middle English School and located in the compound of the Calcutta Madarsha.
