
In the bygone days, Sukhia Pokhri was called Sukay-Pokhri, meaning the dried up twin lakes located at the hill top. It is situated at an altitude of 7400 ft. and is 19 km from the Darjeeling town. Centrally located, it borders Sikkim in the north and Nepal in the west.
The magnificent Mt. Kanchenjunga in the north forms the backdrop of the serene and beautiful hamlet. Of late it has occupied a visiting place in the map of tourism in the District of Darjeeling. The climate of the place is health giving. People are simple and hard working. Trade and transport are the main occupation of the people of the region. Rainy season is very much prominent of the place. It remains fog-ridden making visibility rate rather poor. The place is strewn with offices, schools and health centers.
Another unique feature of the place is the natural habitat of pre historic animal called Himalaya Newt. It is highly endangered species. It is a subject for research scholars for biological studies.
Now coming to the educational schemes of things Sukhia Pokhri H.S School is a century old institution. It is said that the school was established in the year 1888 during the British Regime by Scott missionary. The School has a history of its own. It is often regarded as the Heritage School.
By stages over the decades, the School upgraded into High School in 1953 and H.S School in 1984. Students of all categories have access to the facilities for the pursuit of course of studies in commensurate with the need of time.
