History

Krishnagar A.V. School was founded in the year 1849 by late Babu Broja Nath Mukherjee – then a teacher in the local missionary school (afterwards, proprietor, Sanskrit press Depository, Calcutta) in collaboration with two of his intimate friends viz:- (1)Late Principal Umes Chandra Dutta Gupta – the great and recondite scholar and educationist with whose name the early history and fame of Krishnagar College are inseparably associated and (2) Late Babu Trinath Sen, also a distinguished teacher of consummate ability and experience. Originally it started as a small vernacular school with only two teachers under the thatched shed of the Nediarpara Barowari. Soon the school was raised to the status of an H.E. School through the untiring energy and selfless devotion of Late Rai Jadunath Roy Bahadur and Late Babu Kalicharan Ghosh – then a pleader in the local Bar. In fact, the Roy Bahadur who was next only to Maharaja Bahadur of Nadia in power and in influence, had to bear the brunt of management continuously for the first 20 to 25 years.

The school can hardly afford to forget the memory of Late Rai Prosanna Coomar Bose Bahadur. In early eighties of the last century when the ravages of malaria scared away the people of Krishnagar  the number of pupils on the rolls of the school witnessed a plummeting fall.It was the bold and administration of Babu Prosanna Coomar that saved the institution from extinction.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NAME: The school, as the name implies(Anglo Vernacular) is made up two separate and independent departments viz:- (1)the English department consisting of the first 7 classes with sections and (2) the vernacular department consisting of the next four primary classes with sections, Thus the institution, as is constituted now, is capable of offering a continuous course of school education as outlined in the Government Educational Code, from an acquaintance of the alphabet to high degree of proficiency in general education corresponding to the Matriculation standard of Calcutta University.

THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE: From the very beginning the founders of the institution realized through experience which is at once painful and bitter (vide the origin and early history of the school) that education in order to be successful, should have an indigenous outlook, not exotic, should be suited to the traditions and temperament of the people receiving it and not be dominated by any foreign influence. It should be adapted to the changing needs of time and not be rendered inelastic for the sake of vested interests. Since then the school boasts of conducting activities inspired with a sense of self-reliance and self-help.
