“The girls’ school at Barasat” referred to by Niroja in Tagore’s “Malancha” has enriched itself in course of time and today it has become afull grown tree whose foliage gives shade to innumerable human beings; whose blooming flowers enchant the whole world with its fragrance.
It is assumed that as the famous educator John Drinkwater Bethune came to the inspection of Barasat Kalikrishna Girls’ School, he got inspiration for his Calcutta Female School which was established in 1849,later known as Bethune Collegiate School. Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar ,Pyaricharan Sarkar, Kalikrishna Mitra , and the then District Magistrate Charles Binni Trevor were determined to materialize the dream of Vidyasagar , the revolutionary key figure of the Bengal Renaissance, who worked towards the upliftment of women’s status in India.
In 1847, in Barasat Dakshin para Chandi Mandap the school was started. Kuntibala, daughter of Sri Nabinkrishna Mitra ( kalikrishna Mitra’s brother) was the first student of this school. An institution which was started with only three girls has gradually developed into one of the leading educational institutions for girls in Barasat and also inWest Bengal. The superstitions of the contemtporary orthodox Hindus whose demeaning attitude towards educated girls could not curb Vidyasagar’s ever enthusiastic spirit. His iron determination to educate and enlighten the girls of the society motivated Kalikrishna Mitra for a social reform which resulted in the foundation of Barasat Kalikrishna Girls’ School.
The sapling planted by Vidyasagar and Kalikrishna Mitra has developed to a full-grown tree, Barasat Kalikrishna Girls’ High School, under the care and supervision of Sri Binoy Bhusan Gangopadhyay and Smt. Uma Gangopadhyay. They left no stone unturned to enhance the glory of this institution with their iron determination, sense of discipline and strong personality.
In the present day, Barasat Kalikrishna Girls’ High School has become a prominent name in West Bengal. It has developed its infrastructure in many aspects. The school has five laboratories, a good library and a computer lab. The school has also installed a solar panel too.
The students not only excel in academics, but also perform with excellence in cultural and sports activities. Many have been accoladed with numerous awards from the Govt. such as the Kannyasree awards and they have also performed well in District and State level competitions. Every year they come out in flying colours in the board and the council examinations.
Barasat Kalikrishna Girls’ High School is a family. The students, teaching and non-teaching staff work in a team for the advancement of the school in various fields. The school is a holy place to all the students and the staff and they create an atmosphere adhering to the words of its logo:
''यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवताः।"
Where women are honoured , divinity blossoms there.
