Amidst the resonating sound of cymbals and conch shells, on the auspicious day of Mahashtami in October, 1949 scores of East Bengal refugees who had been rendered homeless by the tragedy of Partition, joined hands to lay the foundation of Deshapriya Nagar. Named after Deshapriya Jyotindra Mohan Sengupta, it took an immense labour of love and a labour of commitment to build the land one brick at a time.
Keeping in mind the urgency of education for their children in the new land, an Education Board was formed in December 1950 and on 31 December, 1950 Belgharia Deshapriya Vidyaniketan was established as a co-education school for both boys and girls.
The school began its humble steps from the abandoned building of the Sonar Bangla cloth workshop. Sri Ramlal Chakrabarty volunteered to be the first Principal, while Sri Narendra Mohan Bhattacharya, Sri Amalendu Banerjee, and Sri Kalipada Bandopadhyay became part of the teaching fraternity of the school, guiding a total of fourteen students.
It took committed endeavours of the Deshapriya Nagar residents to acquire land for laying the foundations of the school’s own portals. Over 800 square meters of land was wilfully grabbed despite the fears of legal action and finally, after spirited efforts, the school became operational in its own building---of bamboos and shoddy fences and makeshift asbestos terraces--- from 1952. The female students attended classes in the morning shift while the male students attended them in the afternoon slot. However, in 1952 itself, a separate school building was established and named as Belgharia Deshapriya Bidyaniketan Girls' High School with Smt. Jhunu Gupta its first Headmistress and Shri Panchanan Sarkar as its first Secretary.
From 1 January, 1954 the school got affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and in 1955, 14 girls sat for their school final examinations for the first time. In 1965, the school was accredited as a Higher Secondary School (old format) with two students securing national scholarships and a gold medal in Biology in 1966. From 1974-1998, the school remained a Secondary School and upgraded itself to a Higher Secondary School under the new format (10+2) in 1999.
In over seventy years, the school has come a long way; from its makeshift bamboo structure to the grand two-tiered building that abounds in itself a throbbing collective of over thirty teachers and five hundred students. While the school’s administration has put in concerted efforts at emboldening the infrastructure of the school, the state government’s policies such as KanyaShree, ShikshaShree, OikyaShree and the Mid-day meals have been systematically implemented for the students’ welfare. With almost hundred per cent pass record in academics, our students have brought us laurels in co-curricular activities, representing the school in district and state-level sports and other cultural events. Today, the Belgharia Deshapriya Vidyaniketan Girls’ High School can boast of its students who have secured places in mass media, government offices as bureaucrats and police personnel as well as doctors, engineers, and teachers.
The school is committed towards creating an amiable educational ecosystem for young aspirational girls, leading them towards a better and brighter future.
