History

The concept of school has evolved over the years in this part of the world and during this period the concept and execution has changed almost in a metamorphic way. From the very early days of Brahmacharyashram, the period of celibacy and learning at the Guru's home, till the present day the characteristics of school have transformed significantly. This, of course, bespeaks the ardent desires in the people for education. In spite of the impositions during the colonial era the towering social leaders like the lion hearted Raja Rammohan Roy, the incomparable and invincible Vidyasagar, William Carey, Alexander Duff, John Bethune were the pioneers to herald the new days in the field of education. Perhaps because of the undaunted spirit of the lone fighter Vidyasagar education has become an elementary requirement in every Bengali household, even among those who perpetually find themselves struggling against deprivation, insecurity and dismal future. The entire period of the forties of the last century saw a massive upheaval in every sphere of life, particularly in Bengal. The Second World War, the terrible famine, the partition and the macabre eviction left a permanent scar mark in the very psyche of the Bengalis. All these recollection becomes relevant because SETHBAGAN ADARSHA VIDYAMANDIR (H.S.) as it now stands, is the child of that chaos, that turbulence . It is an offspring of the unrelenting resoluteness of those hapless people who felt the necessity to create opportunities for the education of their children in spite of standing in the midst of an all pervading gloom, gruesome poverty and a dismal future. The school itself started with some of the local infants in the ground floor of the house of Dr. Upendra kishore Pal Choudhury, a man of great philanthropic mission and also the longest serving Secretary of the school. In fact, his sister initiated the process. Later an abandoned stable of the Zamindar Seth was converted into a school in 1950 and the school got recognition upto class 6 in 1956. With the passage of time a new makeshift building was erected a few yards away from the original building and gradually the school was upgraded from Class 6 to Junior High School in 1958, then to High School in 1960, to H.S. in 1965 and in 1976 to New H.S. level. Thus a marshy land became the breeding ground of a new society, new passion and new vision. Hundreds of the children of the rootless families found their alma mater in this school and created their own niche` in the society. Thousands of evicted people that came groping in the abysmal wilderness of insecurity found Sethbagan as their promised land and SETHBAGAN ADARSHA VIDYAMANDIR ( H.S.) that has been nurturing their children through generations, still stands as a shaft of glory, of a noble awareness of those people who never gave in. Education has always been the foremost priority of their life.
