
Bahirkhand is a small village covered with lush greenery in the vicinity of Tarakeswar, a famous pilgrimage site to the Hindus. It is under the jurisdiction of Haripal Police Station of Hooghly district in West Bengal. It is in this village that a noble soul Sri Girish Chandra Bhar (1857 to 1933) took initiative to establish a school for the upliftment and wholesome development of his village people. He was the Hon'ble President of Calcutta Union Board and the Hon'ble Magistrate of Serampore. To bring fulfilment of his dream project, he donated 3.65 Acre land of his own and a sum of Rupees 50000 (Fifty Thousand) at the then time. It was for his visionary zeal and mammoth effort that "Bahirkhand Girish Institution" was established on the auspicious occasion of 10th January, 1927. The journey begins of an educational Institution.
On 5th October 1928, the school began its classes (from class one to ten). From the very beginning of January 1928, the school started to follow the curriculum laid down by the University of Calcutta.
Although boys initially attended the school, within a few years, girls also came attending the school. In respect of socio-economic scenario of rural Bengal, it was really heartwarming incident. In the year 1964-65, the Higher Secondary course was included in the school curriculum and in 1997-98, the New stream course of H.S Council was included in the school curriculum.
Sri Anil Kumar Sanyal who served the school as an Assistant Teacher later, was also a bonafide Student of the first batch of old Higher Secondary Examination in 1966. Till now the school has produced many stalwarts who are established in their respective fields. Mention may be made of Dr. Dilip Banerjee (U.S.A), Sri Anil Guchait (noted Scientist, U.S.A), Sri Prankrishna Mondal (C.A., England), Prof. Mrityunjoy Samanta (statistics, U.S.A), Sri Mrinmoy Samanta (Chemistry ,U.S.A) and so on.
Presently the school runs with much glory and grandeur and the number of enrolled students are 1001 (Boys- 402, Girls- 599).
With all the Government grants and projects like "Kanyashree", "Sikshashree", “Aikyashree", the school is well organised and disciplined. A sweet and endearing relationship cords all the students, teachers and guardians here.
A good relationship prevails in between the guardians, staff and the Managing Committee of the school. The school is liable to bear the torch of education amongst the students from generation to generation.
