It was a cloudy night in January 1926. On the 1st floor of 96 Bechu Chatterjee Street,Calcutta,the residence of Debendranath Mandal, were seated four persons Debendranath Mandal,Ajar Chandra Sarkar,Balai Chand Chatterjee & Durgamohan Mookherjee. There subject of discussion was the establishment of a truely public school in the town of Hooghly - Chinsurah.The need of such a school had been keenly failed for a long time and the idea first struck Balai Chand Chatterjee, then a teacher of Training Academy,Chinsurah. Durgamohan Mookherjee who was also at that time a teacher of the Training Academy, supported his idea and aggreed to work with him translating his idea into action.They were fumbling for a man who would take up their cause and try in right earnest to give their idra a form and shape. They hit upon the name of Debendranath Mandal as the fittest man to be approached.
Practically the whole night of 5th January 1926 was spent over the discussion and Debenbabu was convinced and as per his proposal the name of the school is settled and he took charge of the financial side of arduous tasks under taken, while Balaibabu and Durgamohanbabu took up the task of securing boys to give the school a start. Ajarbabu volunteered his best services for the cause.
Thus Chinsurah saw the foundation of an Institution in memory of Deshbandhu, the legecy of his "Mrityuheen pran". The founders wanted to capture at Chinsurah a bit of the spark that would in future illuminate the darkness of our minds and enfranchise our education from the bondage of dependance. Deshopriyo Joyindramohan Sengupta inaugrated this instution on the 31st January 1926 with Justice Monmothonath Mukherjee in the chair and in the august presence of Raibahadur Mahendra Chandra Mitra with 82 students and 12 number of teachers with Balai Chand Chatterjee as the Provissional Head Master. Debendranath Mandal as the founder Secratary shouldred this responsibility upto 20/6/1940.
