The school was established as " Saint Marie's Institution " ( École de Sainte Marie ) by Father Magloire Barthet in 1862 . In 1894 it was renamed "École Publique de Garçons" having been run by the French Government and was rechristened Dupleix College (Collège Dupleix) after famous ruler of colonial France and the first Governor of Chandernagore, Joseph François Dupleix . The school was finally renamed Chandernagore Kanailal Vidyamandir after the name of Kanailal Dutta , well-known revolutionist martyr and ex-student of this school on 17th May 1948 just before the liberation from French rule.
