Amarkanan Deshbandhu Vidyalaya, one of the model schools of the district was established having the noble vision and patronization of an eminent personality of Bankura, Sri Gobinda Prasad Singha in the holy memory of Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das during the civil disobedience movement in 1930. From May, 1939 the school started its journey with some mud houses and 116 students. The IX and X classes were opened respectively in 1940 and 1941. The Government of West Bengal sanctioned a grant to upgrade the school into a Multipurpose Higher Secondary school. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education sanctioned co-educational classes in 1960.This glorious institution had the vanity for foot-marks with bodily appearance of the highest legendary of the country -- Mahatma Gandhi, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Kabi Nazrul Islam, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukhopadhyay, Swami Madhabananda, Acharya Vinova Bhabe and the Prime Minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi and many others. Last but not the least Amarkanan was 'built with the bones of Amarnath Chattopadhyay', who lost his life in the process of construction of the school building.
