History

Shibpur Dinobundhoo Institution (Main) is not merely the name of a school but it is one of strong pillars in spreading universal education as a skilled pilot in the contemporary era from its very inception. Almost 150 years old institution had witnessed various educational reforms from British imperial period to independent India.

The establishment date is not agreed upon, but the official year of establishment is 1874. Its present location is in the ward no.35 under Howrah Municipal Corporation, West Bengal. The school premises is located at 412, G.T. Road near Botanical Garden. The school is recognized by both West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. This is a school for Boys up to class X and coeducational in the higher secondary section. It doesn't have an attached Primary section. It imparts  grades from five to twelve. Bengali is the medium of instructions in this school. The academic session starts in January.  This school is approachable by all roads leading to Botanical Garden.

In the year 1874 the school takes the name Shibpur Higher Class English School and gets recognition from the University of Calcutta. In the year1876, Babu Dinobundhoo Mukherjee was selected the secretary of this institution. He came as a commander and under his leadership and untiring effort the school entered a phase of rapid growth. Babu Dinobundhoo Mukherjee was serving in a Mercantile firm and at the same time a successful amateur homoeopathy practitioner and maintained an outdoor charitable dispensary. He brought wonderful cures for which he never accepted any remuneration. His influence as a doctor curved out a secured niche for himself not only in this village but also in the remotest part of the district of Howrah. During this period Mr. H.M Riely, erst while superintendent of police of Howrah had the kindness to join our committee as president and gave a great impetus to the institution. Dinobundhoo babu felt that Science should be taught for the social and economic upliftment of the nation. So, it was his dream to create an environment for culture of scientific values and develop science teaching in school.  Dr. Mahendra lal Sarkar, inspired him a lot in this regard. In the year 1907 science laboratory of this school was inaugurated by famous Bengali litterateur Sri Ramendra sundar Tribedi.

On 15 th February1919 one of the greatest sons of Bengal breathed his last. Belonging to a very poor family Dinobundhoo babu set a glittering example that poverty cannot restrain a person to do great work for mankind. Only, will force, dedication and determination can direct a man to create something for the welfare of society as well as for the mankind.

On 12 th March in the year 1922 in an open meeting held at Shibpur it was decided unanimously that the school will be renamed in memory of its chief architect Sri Dinobundhoo Mukherjee.

Since, then the number of students gradually went on increasing. There was not enough space for such a big number of students. So, another branch of the school was founded at Bhutnath Halder lane, Howrah. The branch is named as Shibpur Dinobundhoo Institution(Branch). From 1956 the two schools run as two independent institutions.
