History

Srimat Swami Projnanananda Saraswati (alias Satish Chandra Mukhopadhyay) was a freedom fighter as well as a saint. He established 'Shankar Math' at Barishal (now in Bangladesh). He breathed his last on 5th February1921 at the age of 36. Before his death, he offered some money to one of his desciples, Jogesh Chandra Mukhopadhyay, who was a successful businessman at that time. Swamiji adviced him 'to do something for the welfare of people'. Just after the independance, Jogesh Chandra Mukhopadhyay approached to an eminent academician of this district, Sri Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya. At that time there was no Boys' school in this area. So a meeting was held on 26th December 1949 and the resolution was taken to establish a school and this institution started its journey from 1st January 1950 at 1/4, Haru Mistry Lane near Shalimar Railway Station. In the year 1953 the school switched from its initial address to its present address. The present school building was built in 1952. Shri Yogesh Chandra Mukhopadhyay (Bengali: শ্রী যোগেশচন্দ্র মুখোপাধ্যায়), the founder of the school, contributed his personal land for the school building purpose. He became the first Secretary of the Managing Committee of the school and Sri Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya became the first President. From 1st January 1954, the school was officially recognised by the Government as a High School. The first batch of school final was sent up in the year 1955. The school got recognition as a XI Class Higher Secondary School from the year 1962. and in 1977 this institution was upgraded to XII Class Higher Secondary School. Now the school runs Science, Humanities and Commerce in the Higher Secondary section. The deciples of Srimat Swami Projnanananda Saraswati also established the famous 'Saraswati Press' at Belghoria and 'Projnanananda Bhaban' at Mahisadal.
