History

The Oriental Seminary for Girls is an old and renowned educational institution for the girls in the Chitpur area of North Kolkata.It is a Government Sponsored institution and started its journey as an extended family of The Oriental Seminary.The Oriental Seminary started in 1829 by the educator Gour Mohan Addy, was the earliest privately run, first-rate school for children of Hindu parents in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta).The establishment of a school for learning English, free from religious influences was a major contribution of Addy. Traditional Indian education centres which taught Sanskrit and/or Persian had started fading out.The Girls' section started more than hundred years after the establishment of the Boys' section.It was founded by Sri Amrita Krishna Basu Mallick on January 2nd.,1934 and is situated on Rabindra Sarani. The institution is a morning shift one, sharing the building with the boys' section, with a long-standing dream of its own building.

The institution has mostly first generation learners coming from poor socio-economic strata. The students who are specially abled and also the students coming from the nearby red light are also encouraged admission and special care is taken for them. The aim of this institution is the holistic development of the students. Computer education has been introduced for all classes with the active support from TISS. The institution is blessed with ICT grant twice within a span of ten years. Vocational training in computer hardware, jewellery making and beautician courses are held for Class IX students with the active support from Tomorrow's Foundation. Special classes are held by Nanhi Kali for the upper primary students. Students actively participate in Youth Parliament Competition, ICT mela, Gan mela, Poush mela,various sports and yoga competitions, Kala Utsav, Self Defence training program, Sukanya Training program, Kanyashree Utsav etc. with the financial support from SSM,RMSA and Government of West Bengal. Events like Independence day, Republic day, Annual Sports, Birth anniversaries of great personalities are celebrated with due respect and reverence. All eligible students have been facilitated with Kanyashree, Aikyashree and Shikshashree projects of the Government of West Bengal. Regular Mid Day Meal Project is a big help for the students as well as the guardians.Awareness program like prevention of Dengue and Malaria, that for the adolescent girls living in the area by CINI,observance of Road Safety week, Nirmal Vidyalay week are carried out with utmost care and sincerity. The main aim is to develop each student into a good human being with strong sense of values.
