Our school ATHENAEUM INSTITUTION (H.S.) has been named over the name of Athena who was the Goddess of wisdom in ancient Greek city Athens. The school initially located at 99, Garpar Road was founded in 1894, with the the caring patronization of eminent educationist Shri Atul Krishna Nandi and some distinguished member of Brahma Samaj. The school was later shifted to the present address (100A, Garpar Road, Kolkata 700009) in 1928.
The present building was actually the residential house of famous literateur Sri. Upendrakishore Raychaudhury. Widely acclaimed children's magazine "Sandesh" was initiated to publish from here in 1914. Poet and writer Sri. Sukumar Roy and filmmaker Sri. Satyajit Roy took birth here. For this rich association with Bengali literature and culture, this building was enlisted as A-1 Heritage building in 2001 by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Many renowned names are attached with this centurial School.
This is a Higher Secondary School for the student of class five to class twelve. Our school has been permitted to introduce Arts and Commerce for HS Section since 2000 and Science since 2001. In the HS Section Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biological Science, Nutrition, History, Geography, Political Science, Sanskrit, Economics, Education, Home Management and Family Resource Management, Accountacy, Business Studies, Environmental Studies are offered as a subject in our school. For the best interest of the students we are putting effort to introduce Costing and Taxation and Modern Computer Application as soon as possible. We have well-equiped laboratory, soon to be further modernized as the work is under progress. We have a library enriched with books of various fields and the books are distributed among the students with the supervision of a teacher at regular interval. The playground behind our school building provides the opportunity for the student to play within the campus under the supervision of our sports teacher. The Mid-day meal project under Sarva Shiksha Mission is available for student of class five to class eight. The arrangement of Computer training for all the students is soon to begin.
