History

The history of the Ballygunge Govt.High School dates back to circa 1908 when the David Hare Training college was established at 115 ,Albert Building at College Street. Since it was a leased accommodation Mr.W.E.Griffith M.A(Oxon),the first Principal of the college took an initiative to transfer the college to South Kolkata where it could be built and expanded on  a larger campus. The then acting Director of Education and the Principal of the Presidency college Mr.H.R.James laid emphasis on establishing a Practising School besides  transferring  the college to a more spacious and suitable location somewhere near Bhawanipore .In the meantime, Mr.Grifith joined as an Inspector of School  and as a consequence the project of transferring the college and setting up the proposed Practising School faced some initial hiccups. After sometime The Calcutta University Commission was set up in 1917.The commission was better known as Sadler Commission,Sir M.E.Sadler being its Chairperson.Sir Asutosh Mukherjee was one of the two important Indian members of the commission. Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee left no stone unturned and used his good office to set up the proposed Teacher-training  and the adjacent Practising School.Though Sadler Commission recommended the foundation of the College and the School at its present location it faced many obstacles and the project got stalled for sometime. Finally  ,overcoming all the hurdles , the  then Governor of Bengal and the Chancellor of the University of Calcutta inaugurated the Ballygunge Govt.High School on 3rd January 1927 and the school got its  immediate affiliation under the University of Calcutta.

When the school was established in 1927 there was no morning section at that time. The day section was from Class III to Class X. The Principal of the David Hare training College was the Controlling Officer of the school and it became an experimental school of the said college. The morning section came into existence in 1953 .In 1957 classes ,class I and Class II were further added. The first headmaster of the school was Nagendra Nath Dutta.( 1927-1932).
