History

The South Suburban School was established as long back as in the year 1874. It is one of the oldest schools of Kolkata which is still functioning with its glory. The school was situated at Hazra Pukur (Hazra Park) area. After that the school was shifted to its present address i.e. Gopal Banerjee Street, Bhowanipore, Kolkata - 700025. The present building of the school was constructed in the year 1888 by an Italian architect. The school has one more building called 'choto bari' (small building).

At the time of inception the school was named as 'South Suburban School, Kalighat'. Subsequently the name was changed to 'South Suburban School, Bhowanipore' and the school is called as ‘South Suburban School (Main)’ since a branch of the school came up.

Dr. Ganga Prosad Mukhopadhyay, father of Sir Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay was one of the founders of the school and educationist Shiv Nath Shastry was the first head master.

South Suburban School Main was instrumental in establishing Ashutosh College, Sir Ramesh Mitra Girls School, Chakraberia High School and South Suburban School (Branch).

Sir Ashutosh Mukhopadhyay, Don Satish Chandra Mukhopadhyay, Premendra Mitra (poet),  Achintya Kumar Sengupta (novelist),  Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, Tarun Kumar, Rabi Ghosh (film actors), Dr. Sisir Bose, Sukumar Samajpati (footballer), ex-Vice chancellor Ananda Deb Mukhopadhyay, Pavithra Mukhopadhyay (poet) are the few among the alumni of the school.

The school organises summer camp, nature study camp, trekking and other activities through an organisation named 'Nature Lovers' formed by the school. The school has a rich heritage and NCC (Army, Air, Navy) training are given to its students. A Boys' Scout wing is also there.

Besides an Alumni Association has also been formed by the ex-students of the school who is conducting quiz and other programs, health and dental check up camps for the benefits of the students.
