School History

In the year 1816 one of the oldest schools in Bengal was established at Khidderpore Port area under the supervision of Church Missionary Society (C.M.S.). During that period Hindu School, General Assembler of even Calcutta University did not come into being. In the year 1854 this school got the status of High School. In the year 1857 when the Great Sepoy Mutiny took place, in the same year Calcutta Medical College and great Calcutta University was established. With further development of the school, established by the Church Missionary Society become famous as C.M.S. High School, Garden Reach.

With further and gradual progress and development of the Calcutta Port the school was shifted at Sonai Kalibari Area from its old port area. Later the school finally shifted at 21, Dent Mission Road.

By the year 1857 St. Barnabas’ Church was established. The Church authority used to run a school in the name of St. Barnabas’ M.E. School. In the year 1930 C.M.S. High School, Garden Reach merged with St. Barnabas’ M.E. School and got the new identity as St. Barnabas’ High School. For that in the school pad of the present school it is written that St. Barnabas’ High School (H.S.) [In corporating CMS High School, Garden Reach].

It is a matter of pride to mention that on 26th November, 1920 the then officiating school inspector Sri Prashanta Chatterjee in his report mentioned that- “I visited the school today on behalf of university. It is a very old school nearly century old. This school was established in 1816 and was raised to the status of a High English School in 1854”. When Mr. Chatterjee wrote the report then the name of the school was Church Missionary Society English High School, Garden Reach, Khidderpore.

The report also said that the students of the school first appeared in the “Entrance Examination” in the year 1860 and the school was very famous and popular among the common people. It also wrote “It sent up candidates to the Entrance Examination for the first time in 1860. The school has been doing very useful work since then and is one of the most popular institutions in this part of the town.”

In the year 1967 the school was raised to the status of Higher Secondary and rights was given to start Science and Arts. Again in 1979 the school became as Madhyamik standard.

Later in the year 1999-2000 the school became Higher Secondary school with Arts subjects and in the year 2001-2002 it started teaching Commerce subjects.

As we all know that Khidderpore area is an underdeveloped area, and the school has been imparting education among the needy for decades, and it has become possible because of the active support and co-operation of the local people. The school authority hopes to get the similar kind of support and co-operation in future too. The school is run by the Christian Missionaries with Grant in Aid from the state Government.
