History

The year was 1954, when the Greater Garia was merely a suburb with an abundance of greenery, ponds and marshy lands dotted with a few hutments and fewer pucca middle class buildings. In this scenario a handful of cultured and educated middleclass people laid the foundation of a dream, which was materialized in a girls school within the precinct of Garia Baroda Prasad Boys School, being named as Garia Girls School on January 2, 1954.

A journey was flagged off and there was no looking back. Within a year, in the year 1955, the school got the Government affiliation and in 1956 the girl-students of the school appeared for the School Final Examination as regular candidates.

For the next sixteen years, Baroda Prasad Boys School was the foster address of the Garia Girls School, although the need for a separate and independent identity was felt urgent for further expansion and development. That wish too, was fulfilled with the generous support of the then Secretary of the School Managing Committee, Late Kalicharan Chattopadhyay, who donated a three bigha plot in the name of his departed mother Harimati Devi and very soon a two storied building was developed under the banner of the school itself.

Finally, in 1970, on 8th February, Garia Harimati Devi Uchcha Balika Vidyalaya emerged as an independent seat of learning. Since then, it has been serving as a pioneer institution in the field of womens education. New heights were scaled one after another. It was the August of 1981 when Higher Secondary studies in Humanities was launched and in 1985 the Science stream was introduced.

Meanwhile the school building was expanded to a three-storied building with a Hall, a fairly large Library, an well-equipped Computer Room and Science Laboratories. Over the years with the increasing roll strength, further expansions of the school building have taken place.

Recently a separate three storied-building has been erected and named as Begum Rokeya Bhavan as a tribute to the famous Bengali feminist thinker and educationist. The third floor of the building houses a Biology laboratory and a Geography laboratory as well.

Multi-Gym has been arranged for the students on the second floor of the said building. This Gym has become a centre of attraction for the students interested in the sports activities and physical education. From 2014, Mid-day Meal Scheme has been implemented for the students of classes V to VIII. A suitable kitchen has been built for serving the cooked food items to the students.

In 2019, a big Dining Hall has also been constructed as a part of the Mid-day Meal Scheme. All these recent developments and expansions have been facilitated by the generous grants from the Honble Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee, Rajpur Sonarpur Municipality and Sarba Shiksa Abhijan Fund. Besides, the school has also been benefitted by the Development Fund created by the guardians and the well-wishers.
