With the country fighting relentlessly for her independence from the British rule in 1945 the aspirations of people in every nook and corner of the country reached sky high. It was the time of giving shape to all the dreams that were expected to be emancipated, to build the nation with all care and affection of the new sunshine. Amlajorah, then a small village in the Panagarh-Kanksa belt of the erstwhile district of Burdwan, felt the same urge to reconstruct her dreams. Accordingly, in the same year, i.e., 1945, the people of the village decided to set up a school for their children; and with the able assistance and counselling provided by stalwarts like Late Bholanath Ghosh, Late Gobindasharan Sarkar et al a junior English school was founded under the name Amlajorah Amritalal Middle English School. At the time of its commencement the school had only classes V and VI. Late Gobindasharan Sarkar, the Zamindar of the village at that time donated the required land for setting up the school, and late Shasadhar Sarkar, a contemporary learned gentleman was appointed as the first Headmaster of it. The school began its journey with only three teachers. Then came the year 1947, the year of Independence, in which the school was accorded its first official recognition. Five years later, in 1952 the school was sanctioned the permission to elevate its standard to a four-class junior high school, and it started teaching classes VII and VIII. After the tenure of Late Shasadhar Sarkar, the school was run efficiently by the teachers, with the recently demised Prasanta Kumar Chatterjee leading from the front.
The next headmaster was Jamunabehari Majumder, who did a commendable service in running and developing the institution for several years. In 1964 Sri Trilochan Mondal, a resident of the neighbouring village Babnabera, and an erudite gentleman took up the charge of the Headmmaster, after a brief stint of the late Madanmohan Karmakar(1963-1964). During Sri Mondal's tenure as Headmaster Amlajorah High School evolved into a full-fledged High School with classes upto X. The School was sanctioned its permission to teach upto class X in the year 1978. The late Sasthi Narayan Gorai, the eminent Asansol-based industrialist and entrepreneur, in his holy inclination to contribute significantly towards the development of this region donated a substantial amount of money for construction of classrooms.
Several local luminaries, including Ranjit Kumar Ghosh, Sushanta Kumar Sarkar, Samaresh Dutta and many more took active interest in the formation and development of the school. In 1997 the Golden Jubilee of the School was celebrated with much fanfare and pomp. At present the school has been upgraded to a Higher Secondary one with Vocational education incorporated. The vocational course for class VIII & XII levels were introduced in the year 2008. In 2010 a long-nurtured dream of the local people was materialised as the school obtained its permission to introduce the Higher Secondary course. The school is currently run in a new building at the outskirts of the village. It is thriving to reach newer heights under the able leadership of Sri Sandip Chakraborty, the present Headmaster.
