HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
Dishergarh Ambika Charan Institution is an age-old educational institution and quite naturally has a ling history, uch of which is not documented. The origin of this hoary institution dates as far back as 1890 when Sri Baikuntha Nath Mahata of the village of Sanctoria established a Middle English School in Sanctoria with a handful of students. Fortunately, the school set up by Sri Baikuntha Nath Mahata drew the attention of a generous and prophetic soul Sri Ambika Charan Laik who felt the need for assuming the financial responsibility of the school for improving its state and status. With the patronage of Ambika Charan Laik the Middle English School was upgraded to Sanctoria High English School in the year 1894.
The school got the affiliation and recognition of the University of Calcutta in 1896. Sri Ambika Charan Laik made provisions for the entire cost of construction of a new building for the school in the village of Dishergarh and the school moved to its new abode in 1902. The recurring grants provided by Sri Ambika Charan Laik brought financial stability to the school which it continued to enjoy even after the demise of Sri Ambika Charan Laik because the prophetic soul had made provisions for continuance of the grants from his zemindary. In recognition and commemoration of the contribution of this great soul Sanctoria High English School was named Dishergarh Ambika Charan Institution.
Kalidas Laik and Mukundalal Laik, the two sons of Sri Ambika Charan Laik, followed their father's legacy. They donated not only the entire land but also the entire cost for construction of a new building. In the month of July 1912 the school was moved from Dishergarh to the newly constructed building and hostel in its present location. Construction of the new school building was completed in 1926 with the financial assiatance of the two sons of Ambika Charan Laik. The main two-storeyed building constrcuted in 1960 wsa the result of concerted efforts made by the Alumni Association. Foundation of the Centenary Building was laid in 1994 as part of the celebation of the Centenary of the school. Besides many alumni, organizations such as Eastern Coalfields Limited, Dishergarh Power Supply Co. Ltd., Dishergarh Notified Area Authority came forward with financial assistance for construction of the building. Subsequently, Sarva Siksha Mission and the School Education Department of the Govt. of West Bengal provided grants for construction of additional classrooms and infrastructure development.
From school final stage the school was upgraded to a Class XI school in 1960. Following the revision of curriculum Class XI was abolished and the school became a Secondary (Madhyamik) School in 1977. The school was upgraded to Higher Secondary (10+2) stage in 1985 and co-education was introduced in the Higher Secondary section. The alumni of the school include luminaries such as the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, scientists, administrators, doctors, professors and many others. Blessed with the active support of numerous well wishers the school has withstood the flux of time and completed a long and glorious journey of 125 years in January 2020.
