History

Ushagram Boys' High School (H.S) was established on 4th February, 1904 and the founder of this school was Rev. William Price Byers, who was a missionary of Methodist Episcopal Church, now known as Methodist Church in India.

The previous name of this school was Ashabari. Now this school is under Bengal Regional Conference of Methodist Church in India and affiliated by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education.The school building was shifted to Raha building, a rented house in Asansol during the second world war and it again came to its own place in 1947.

To spread the light of education among thr poor children of backward areas, the school was established at 3 km far from the urban area. In 1922 Rev. Fred G. William was appointed as the principal Secretary of Ashabari Educational colony. His aim and objective was "Better Citizens in Better Homes in Better Villeges.". He started Vocational Education and introduced self-employment among the hostel students of the school.He made Educational Colony on the 50 acres land of Ashabari with 24 mud wall cottages and all the cottage were hygienic and eco-friendly. Handwork was taught as compulsury subject in Ashabari Educational Society and it was mandatory for the students to chose one subject from Bookbinding, Printing, Carpentry, Agriculture, Weaving, Art and Music. Co-operative Society, Store, Bank, Post office, Library, Carpentry shop were also there in side this village school campus. 

Rev. Fred. G William had agood relation with Rabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi. Rabindranath Tagore termed "Ushagram" to this flourishing village school. The famous work of Rev. Fred G William was Rural Home Sanitation. Many states of India like individed Bengal, Bihar,Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Gujrat etc. and countries like Maxico, followed the septic tank model of Ushagram. This model was also followed at the Asansol Sub - divisional hospital and Asansol Police lines, famous artist Sri Ramkinkar Beij started his carrier as a teacher at the Arts building (now Boys hostel) of this school. Later, he join Santiniketan on request of Rabindranath Tagore.

The school got affiliation from Calcutta University in 1932 and came under grant - in - aid of West Bengal Board of Sendory Education in 1948. The science stream was started in 1964 and the school was upgraded to class XI in 1973. The Higher Secondary Section with Arts and Commerce were started in this school in 2010 and the Science stream was restarted in 2012. In 2008, the school started Vocational Education for class VIII passed students with the following trade : Auto Mobile Maintenance, Auto Electrical and Health Worker. The school celebrated its century in 2004 with granduer and enthusiasm.
