History

St. Paul’s School, Amherst Street, was established by Church Missionary Society in 1822 on the request of the local people with just 16 students. Same year an English medium School was also established in the month of April on the same premises, again with 16 students. The first superintendent appointed by the mission Authority was Mr. J.A. Jetter. In the subsequent period the heads of the school all were Englishmen. The first Bengali Headmaster was Revd. Krishna Mohan Banerjee for the year 1832 – 1836. He was a great academician and acknowledged social reformer of Bengal hailed from a reputed Brahmin family. Rev. Banerjee established a student Hostel there for the poor and the needy children. Afterwards it was a history famed personality Revd. James Long took charge of the school (1841 – 1948). In 1872 while the school was having the Jubilee of its foundation, a double storied building ‘Jubilee House’ was constructed. On the upstairs there was a nice Chapel put up and it is still in use. It was hey day for the school. A three storied hostel building ‘Eland Hostel’ was constructed in the year 1915 when the school was headed by the famous Headmaster, Revd. B.W.Bean. The first ever Scout Group in Undivided India came into existence here in this school in the year 1917. During the years 1927 – 29, when there was a move ‘From Mission to Diocese’ Church Missionary Society got amalgamated with the Diocese of Calcutta and its Churches, Institutions Properties, Burial Grounds were Handed over to the Bishop of Calcutta.

At present under the dynamic Chairmanship of the Bishop, the Rt.Rev. Dr.Paritosh Canning, the school is making steady progress in every respect. God is Showering great blessing and showing a good direction to this school.The motto of the school: Fortiter, Fideliter, Feliciter (Fortitude, Faithfulness, Happiness).
